Hudd Byard, who previously worked at GQ and is now art director for Memphis magazine recently spoke to a group of students and faculty at Michigan State University. Despite the stiflingly hot room, he presented a nice overview of what editorial design requires, as well the nuts and bolts of editorial design. His portfolio and the design choices within made me appreciate what I often take for granted. Besides content, there is a reason that I love the magazines I subscribe to (make, craft, wired, ID, etc.) — great design. Often how the story and content is presented within a page is overlooked, but the layout and minutiae of typography can really make quite a difference. Overall the lecture was worthwhile. It is always intriguing to hear about smaller, different facets of subjects, especially the broad subject of design.
